Costa Rica, officially the Republic of Costa Rica, sits in the heart of Central America isthmus, 10° North of the equator and 84° West of the Greenwich Meridian. It’s bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south-southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Costa Rica has an area of 51,100 km² (31,682 square miles). It covers only 0.03 % of the surface of the globe, making it slightly smaller than the U.S. state of West Virginia. Reservoir of biodiversityAlthough the country is small, it proudly shelters in its tropical forests a 6% of the existing biodiversity in the entire world. With hundreds of mammal species, reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds and over 12,000 different plant species, Costa Rica is a biodiversity paradise. Famous for this amazingly large biodiversity, the country aggressively protects its natural heritage. 25.58 % of the country is composed of national parks and protected areas. Besides its biodiversity, Costa Rica is also world famous for its spectacular volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, breathtaking views, friendly people and warm weather.
